Types of wooden windows
Wood windows fall into three general categories:
- Casement windows
- Stormproof windows
- Sliding windows, including sash windows
Wooden casement windows
Casement windows can have top or side hung sashes, which are mainly fitted onto butt hinges. They can incorporate fanlights, as well as opening or fixed sashes in a variety of combinations. The most popular designs are the single opening casement, double opening casement and the triple casement, which has two opening sashes on the outside and a fixed centre sash. The sashes in a casement window can either be rebated together, or they can have a centre mullion. These may also have glazing bars. Flush casement windows fit into this category too – they’re broadly similar, but sit flat within the frame.
Wooden stormproof windows
Stormproof windows are similar to casement windows, but they’re designed to give additional weather protection. To achieve this, the sashes are rebated over the window frame. There are minimal visual differences, so you can choose these windows for added protection and still achieve an excellent quality of finish.
Wooden sash windows
Sliding box sash windows have vertical sliding sashes, hung on traditional cords with lead weights, or on spiral balances. Alternatively, the sashes can be fixed. Sashes can have glazing bars (popular in Georgian style properties), or windows can be horizontally sliding – this style is commonly called a Yorkshire sliding window.
